السريان هما شعب ارامى سليل حضارات ميسوبوتاميا (العراق) و سوريا القديمه زى الاكاديه و الكلدانيه البابليه و الفينيقيه و الكنعانيه و السومريه.

ولحد النهارده بيتكلمو باللغة الاراميه فى سوريا و القامشلى و العراق و تركيا و طور عبدين و فى معلولا و جبعدين و صيدنيا و بخعا و بلاد المهجر .

السريان انهارده بوجه عام مسيحيين بينتمو لكنايس مختلفه منها الكنيسه الشرقيه ( حوالى 300.000 ) ،و الكنيسه الخلقدونيه الكاتوليكيه ( حوالى 900.000 ) ، و الكنيسه السريانية الارتودوكسيه ( حوالى 1.000.000 - 400.000 ) ، و كذا كنيسه بروتيستانتيه.

بطريرك الكنيسه السريانية الارتودوكسيه اللى مقرها دمشق هو مار اغناطيوس زكا الاول عيواس.
