From thence he went to Heidelberg, Germany, and be-came a student in the celebrated university of that place. Returningto America, he read law at Elmira, New York. In 1861 he came toChicago and was admitted to the bar of the state of Illinois on the23d of April of that year. For two years he was in the law officeof Waite & Towne, then leading attorneys of Chicago. In 1864 heunited in the formation of the firm of Fuller. Ham & Shepard. thesenior member of which has for many years been chief justice of thesupreme court of the United States. In 1883 he was elected to thebench of the superior court, and remained a judge of that court tothe time of his death, having been three times elected without oppo-sition.
